The Emmy-nominated actor Paul Mescal is returning to the West End next year in A Streetcar Named Desire. He will play Stanley in the Tennessee William's classic in February 2025.
It is rumoured that after the short West End run the production will then transfer to the New York stage in 2025, also starring Paul Mescal. This would be his New York stage debut.
This follows the production's previous sold-out run at the Almeida Theatre in 2022 and the play's subsequent West End run. The play was revived at London's Almeida Theatre in north London under the direction of Rebecca Frecknall (Cabaret) and received widespread critical acclaim. The cast included Paul Mescal as Stanley, Patsy Ferran as Blanche, and Anjana Vasan as Stella. Its West End transfer at the Phoenix Theatre in March 2023 became the fastest-selling production to date in any ATG venue. The revival received 6 Olivier Award nominations and went on to win 3 for Best Revival, Best Actor (Mescal), and Best Supporting Actress (Vasan).
A Streetcar Named Desire was first performed on Broadway in 1947 and tells the story of two estranged sisters Blanche and Stella. Blanche, a former Southern belle moves into a shabby apartment in New Orleans with her younger sister and brother-in-law, Stanley. The play is one of the most critically acclaimed plays of the 20th century and is considered one of Williams' most popular works. A film adaptation was released in 1951.
The creative team features set designer Madeleine Girling, costume designer Merle Hensel, lighting designer Lee Curran, sound designer Peter Rice, and composer Angus MacRae.
A Streetcar Named Desire will run at the Noël Coward Theatre from 3 to 22 February 2025. Further casting and more details are yet to be announced.
